Full-Size Jeep Cherokee
The easiest way to convey the FSJ Cherokee vehicle line up is by giving you a chronological run down.
The year was 1967 and the struggling car company American Motors Corporation, or AMC, had a new boss and he was very interested in getting his hands on the Jeep. He knew that this was the only way to save his company. After inheriting AMC and all of it’s troubles, Roy D. Chapin Jr, kept AMC afloat and in 1969 Edgar Kaiser, owner of Kaiser Industries, sold Jeep to Roy.
“We have reached an agreement to purchase the Kaiser Jeep Corporation for $10 million in cash,
5,500,000 shares of American Motors common stock, and approximately $10 million in negotiable 5 year serial notes.”
-The Story of Jeep 2nd Edition, Patrick R. Foster, (c) 2004
Chapin negotiated a fair price for Jeep, but according to some, it was a mistake. AMC’s Product Development Group vice president said he felt Jeep had more problems than AMC was able to handle. At the time of purchase, Jeep was already a decent sized company whose dollar sales were a little more than half of the entire AMC company. At the time, no one could predict what an amazing future Jeep would have. Chapin was willing to put AMC, Jeep, and his job on the line; if he was wrong then…well, he wasn’t, so never mind.
As early as 1971, prototypes of the future Cherokee were being built, although, at the time of the prototype, the Cherokee model was under the name Commando. It wasn’t until the 1974 Jeep sales brochure that the all new sport utility wagon named Cherokee was debuted. Replacing the old Jeep Commando, the “all new” Jeep Cherokee was claimed to be a new type of vehicle, but was actually just a two-door Wagoneer with an updated styling. The Cherokee had the Wagoneer’s front grille, but the rear windows were changed to being a two-piece unit that had a front air vent as the front part, making it a two-piece window. The Cherokee was said to look fancier than the Wagoneer and was directed to younger drivers due to the less sophisticated, yet more popular design. Jeep was AMC owned at this time.
